The sun has set. The sky is dark, broodingly overcast but otherwise calm – or an impression of calmness is given by the length of the exposure. The rock is actually lit by spill from a remote house on a cliff approximately 250m away; giving an otherworldly feel to what could either be a mountain peak sitting in a sea of fog and catching the moon’s first rays, or a small outcropping in a tiny sea – the only way we can know which is by closely examining the black dots. I stood by the edge of Lake Wanaka, watching the winds carry heavy storm clouds in from the west. Because of the speed of those winds, no weather ever lasts very long in New Zealand; if you don’t like the clouds you’ve been dealt, simply wait a little. I camped out in the car as sleet dumped, and then a little light on the horizon suggested that the storm was lifting – an for a brief moment, the flanks of Mt. Alta behind were lit as sun reflected off it through the veil of cloud that still hung over the lake. The distant shore benefitted somewhat from this light, but that single dark island remained shrouded. MT

It is time

This image’s title refers both to the presence of the clock, the immediacy of the moment, and the abstract relativity of the whole concept of time: when is now? What is now? How do we know when something must be done? When must the shutter be released; what is the optimal moment? Even objects that are static have an ‘ideal time’: in this case, when the sun is at the precisely right height to create shadows sufficient to delineate texture and transparency, but not overwhelm; when the clouds are in a position to reflect off the glass surfaces of the right hand towers, which are at the right level of reflectivity; when the brick in the foreground is aged and evenly patinated by loving birds. It is the only time to make this image, and because of that, the right time. MT

Marina Sunset

The sun recedes slowly on the end of another brilliant blue day – that enchanting gradient of deep blue to subtle pink and the colourless beyond always evokes emotions of a warm, satisfying day outdoors enjoying life. It is a feeling of contented reflection and peace; the chaos of the boats at rest give way to elegant masts and eventually, a zen emptiness. MT

Inversion

To me, good architecture is about balance: with its surroundings, with the people who use it, and from a purely visual aesthetic point of view. If the building dominates or gets lost, then there’s a high chance it didn’t fulfil its purpose – or perhaps it makes its intended users feel just a little uneasy. Every time I’ve visited San Francisco, I’ve spent some imd photographing the Transamerica Pyramid: it’s a building that I find extremely intriguing for several reasons. Firstly, its height and grace in a place with SF’s tectonic conditions; secondly, the way it manages to appear both massive yet light  and airy at the same time – I think it’s the relative delicacy of the flying buttresses at the base, but their absolute massiveness. This image shows neither, but gives you a sense of how it fits into the landscape: I think of it as akin to a large, graceful white bird – perhaps an albatross. It’s also a rather neat slice through the city’s diverse architectural styles. MT
